Who We Are.   West Generation Academy is committed to ensuring that every student can prepare successfully for life’s responsibilities, challenges and opportunities. West Generation Academy will open in Fall 2012 with 6th, 8th and 9th graders at the West High School campus and will serve grades 6-12 by 2015.

Our Model.   The Generation Schools model strives to create an exceptional learning environment for students and a highly satisfying workplace for teachers. The innovative annual calendar provides 30% more instruction time with students   without increasing the work year for staff.

As part of changing structures to better serve students and create an effective teaching environment, students spend each morning in two 75-minute Foundation Courses focused on literacy and numeracy followed by an Advisory/Advocacy block. To deliver instruction, teachers work in collaborative teams focused on how to best reach each student through grouping, re-grouping, joint planning, RTI strategies and working together to best serve all students including SPED and ELL.

In the afternoon, students take three 75-minute Studio Courses, which include science and social studies courses along with foreign language, physical education and electives as well as subjects that address specific student needs or interests. One Studio Course may be an extra-curricular activity such as participating on a sports team or in band, choir or ROTC.

As part of changing the structure of the school year, students have the privilege of participating in two month long College & Career Intensive Courses each year.

A Unique Classroom Structure.   Not only are teachers given longer blocks of time to support students in developing critical skills and competencies, but classrooms are structured into three distinct work areas:

  1. Direct instruction/collaboration area
  2. Technology area – tools useful for remediation, reinforcement and in-depth study, and
  3. Independent work area where students can work alone or in pairs.

Think blending a corporate and elementary school environment in the best way possible in classrooms not specified for specific uses (gym, science lab, etc.).

Open Foundation Teaching Positions. The daily schedule for each Foundation Course teacher includes two 75-minute blocks in the morning, one Student Advocacy/Advisory time and one additional 75-minute course. This provides each teacher with two hours of common planning time daily to collaborate with their team to deliver high quality instruction.

  • (3) – 6th grade Mathematics teachers
  • (4) – 6th grade English teachers
  • (3) – 8th grade Mathematics teachers
  • (4) – 8th grade English teachers
  • (3) – 9th grade Mathematics teachers
  • (4) – 9th grade English teachers

Open Studio Teaching Positions.   Each teacher teaches three 75-minute classes each afternoon.  They facilitate one Student Advocacy/Advisory and provide one critical administrative duty or instructional support role for the school. This provides each teacher with significant common planning time daily to work with other teachers to deliver high quality instruction.

All teachers are expected to support literacy across the curriculum.  DPS curriculum will be utilized and supplemented.  Teachers are expected to pursue a comprehensive set of learning strategies and invest the level of energy and discipline required to achieve ambitious student academic gains.

Curricula must also be aligned to the Common Core and College and Career Readiness (CCR) Standards. As a key part of Intensives, teachers arrange excursions to workplaces and community organizations, and schedule guest speakers to discuss their career paths with students. Each Intensive concludes with a final project that reflects an understanding of a given career pathway and integrates college-readiness skills.

Be a part of a teacher team that helps students plan their future… Between Intensives, College & Career teachers serve as an extension of the guidance staff. This role is crucial because conventional college guidance programs are woefully inadequate. According to the American School Counselor Association, a student-counselor ratio of 250 to 1 is considered optimal, and the nationwide average is 460 to 1.  At Generation Schools, we believe that neither of these ratios is even close to optimal. As a result, we have re-conceptualized the role of our College & Career teachers to include guidance functions.  In addition to teaching Intensives, College & Career teachers help students on an individual basis to monitor their progress toward high school graduation and to navigate the internship, college admissions, financial aid, and job application processes. Each College & Career teacher manages a caseload of students—meeting with them each year, with more targeted attention during junior and senior year—to ensure that no one falls through the cracks.

What current teachers have to say:

“Teaching at Brooklyn Generation has helped me become the teacher I’ve always wanted to be.”

“Teachers often say they could help students achieve if they had smaller classes, fewer students and more professional time.  At Brooklyn Generation we’ve got them.  If the students in our class don’t achieve, then … (laugh) .. what else can we ask for?”
