Harrison School District's Student Leadership Summit Focuses on Substance Use Prevention

June 20, 2025

GSN’s Health, Wellness, and Prevention team partnered with Harrison School District to host a dynamic two-day Youth Leadership Summit in May focused on Substance Use Prevention.

Designed to cultivate leadership and advocacy among students, the summit equipped youth with the essential knowledge, practical skills, and empowering resources needed to become proactive voices in preventing substance use within their schools.

Throughout the event, students showcased their leadership potential by crafting actionable prevention strategies and SMART Goals tailored to their unique school communities. These plans weren't just theoretical; they were created with the intention of real implementation, reflecting the students' deep commitment to making a positive impact among their peers.

The summit fostered meaningful collaboration between students, School Resource Officers (SROs), and district administrators. Together, they explored tools to promote restorative practices and support a healthier school climate.

One SRO shared their surprise and appreciation:

"I didn't know there were this many resources to help the students—and us. We weren’t expecting to learn as much as we did when we were told to come to the summit, and now I’m happy we did!"

This inspiring event not only strengthened leadership skills but also built bridges between youth and trusted adults committed to creating supportive, prevention-focused school communities.
